Puppets for The People

This course, which has been implemented in six countries: The Czech Republic, Italy, Iraq, Israel/Palestine, The UK, The Netherlands, and the U.S. (New York, Colorado, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Washington) is a vibrant, rigorous and inspiring experience that enables students to go directly into the practice of building and performing with puppets. Students will gain tools in theatre and puppet building, and will also obtain techniques and develop ideas for using puppets as a vehicle for social change. This course is a balance between active creative work, vibrant discussion, the history and theories behind puppet building, as well as personal growth. In this intensive action-packed class, participants are introduced to the use of voice (implementing The Litwak Voice Progression), improvisation, drama therapy (including Playback and Sociometry), community and ensemble building, Theatre Of The Oppressed techniques, and playwriting techniques as approaches to working with puppets. At the center of the course is the creative challenge of making a puppet and bringing him or her to life. First, we build the “brain” of the puppet, which reflects what each student wants to work on and is a very private creation of words and/or images. After the brains are completed the faces/heads are formed around them. When the head is complete it is painted and decorated. During this process the participants write plays for the puppets. Once the bodies of the puppets are built, students learn the special technique of performing with this form of puppet. We will then move into a rehearsal period and the course will culminate in a performance presentation.
